Dead Bury Dead

Another of the disciples said to Him, “Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father.” But Jesus *said to him, “Follow Me, and allow the dead to bury their own dead.” (Matthew 8:21, 22 NASB)

My comments: This is what it means to love parents more than you love God. This man did not love God with all his heart, soul and strength. His father was still alive, so he wasn’t saying after tomorrow’s funeral I will come. This man was asked in person by Jesus himself to follow him and chose his father instead. So, he was putting his father ahead of God. It is the same way of thinking as ”I am too busy raising our kids or with my career to serve God. I don’t have time to serve God now. I will just serve Him when I retire.” We are to put Him first, by giving off the top when we tithe, not off the bottom when there is excess. The same with giving our time. When Jesus says ”let the dead bury the dead,” he means let those who are spiritually dead bury those who are physically dead. He is also implying with this example ”let those who are spiritually alive bring the good news to those who are just physically alive.”
